Welcome to the Department of Montana Veterans of Foreign Wars

The following are some of our core programs the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Department of Montana uses to help our veterans, military, their families and communities.

Service Office

Assist veterans and their dependents in applying for and receiving Federal, State and local benefits and represent veterans and dependents before the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Voice of Democracy

Each year, hundreds of high school students from across Montana enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition.

Patriot’s Pen

VFW believes strongly in good citizenship and fostering patriotism. That’s why we encourage youthful minds to examine our nation’s history and their own experiences in modern American society through our Patriot’s Pen youth essay-writing contest. Annually, hundreds of students from grades 6-8, enter to win.

National Military Service

The VFW’s National Military Services (NMS) is the driving force behind our troop and family support efforts. Home to the ever-popular, ever-vital VFW Operation Uplink™ program, the Unmet Needs program and the Military Assistance Program (MAP), NMS has made a significant impact in the lives of millions of service members and their families.

  • Operation Uplink has provided over 5.1 million free connections home for deployed troops and hospitalized veterans through “Free Call Days”.
  • Unmet Needs has provided more than $4 million in grants toward emergency financial aid to military families.
  • MAP has hosted nearly 2 million military families at events ranging from welcome-home ceremonies to family day events.

Buddy Poppies

The VFW conducts its Buddy Poppy distribution at various time throughout the year. The donation from these Buddy Poppy drives are used to help needy Veterans in our communities.
